How this rate is built.

Real 2025–2026 market rates

National averages anchor the math: $25 per 30-minute visit and $55 per overnight. Rover bookings average $21.80 a visit, and professional sitters charge $29 to $39, so the numbers work for both new and established sitters.

Location and experience multiply

Your base rate scales 0.85x in small towns up to 1.3x in premium metros like SF and NYC, matching Rover's city-by-city data. Experience adds up to another 15% for in-demand, certified sitters.

Flat fees for extras

Extra pets, puppies, and medication are flat fees: $10 per additional dog, $5 per cat, $5 for puppies, $10 for medication. That's how working sitters quote them. Holiday dates add 15 to 30%.

Turn that rate into repeat bookings.

The sitter who sends photo updates without being asked is the sitter who gets rebooked. Hotlyne is the app we built for that: share one live timeline link and every walk, feeding, and play session updates itself.

Common pricing questions.

How much should I charge for a 30-minute drop-in visit?

The national average is about $25 per 30-minute visit. Marketplace sitters on Rover book at an average of $21.80 per visit, while established professionals running their own pet sitting business average $29 to $39. Where you fall in that range depends on your market and your experience. A certified, insured sitter in a major metro can charge $30 or more per visit.

How much should an overnight house sit cost?

Overnight pet sitting in the client’s home averages $55 per night nationally, with a typical range of $40 to $75. In premium markets like San Francisco and Seattle, overnight rates of $65 to $85 are common. Most sitters also charge for midday visits added on top, since an overnight usually means 10 to 12 hours on site.

What should I charge for extra pets?

The going rate is about $10 per additional dog per visit and $5 per additional cat. Extra pets mean more feeding, more cleanup, and more time, and clients expect the upcharge. Puppy care adds about $5 per visit because puppies need more frequent potty breaks and supervision.

Should I charge more on holidays?

Yes. Sitters on Rover typically set holiday rates 10 to 20% above standard, and professional sitters commonly charge 20 to 50% more over major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. You're giving up your own holiday. A 15% premium for peak travel dates (spring break, summer) and 30% for major holidays sits in the normal range.

How much can I make as a pet sitter?

It comes down to visits per day. At $25 per visit, two visits a day five days a week is $250 per week, or about $13,000 a year from one weekday route. Sitters who fill mornings, middays, and evenings, and add overnights at $55-plus per night, can build routes worth $35,000 to $50,000 a year.

Is this calculator really free?

Yes. No email required to use it, no signup, no limits. It is one of the free tools we build for pet care professionals. If you like it, share it with a fellow sitter.
